The Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s: The Tuxedo Guitar in Its Most Refined 70s Form

The Les Paul Custom holds a special place in guitar history. Once requested by Les Paul himself as a black, formal version of his namesake guitar, the model grew to become the symbol of luxury and craftsmanship within the Gibson line. The 70s variant brings back the specifications that made the Custom so beloved in that decade, including the three-piece maple top, the 70s neck profile with volute, and the bound ebony fretboard. After twenty years exclusively through Gibson Custom, this model is now back in the Gibson USA line, and it's been worth the wait.

What makes the Buttercream Top version so appealing is the combination of a warm, creamy lacquer finish in glossy nitrocellulose and the rich tone that comes from the mahogany body and maple top. The two Calibrated T-Type humbuckers deliver a wide tonal palette: from full, warm cleans to thick, layered overdrives. The electronics are hand-wired with Orange Drop capacitors, ensuring a smooth, musical tonal response simply not found in cheaper guitars. The Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge and aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece provide a direct, lively string response.

The neck features a distinct 70s profile with a volute for added strength at the headstock, and the bound ebony fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and mother-of-pearl block inlays plays smoothly and precisely. Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with Keystone buttons ensure reliable tuning stability. Details like the 5-ply pickguard, Witch Hat knobs, and Posi-Lok strap locks complete the authentic 70s picture. Includes hardshell case.

The Gibson Les Paul Custom 70s Buttercream Top is a guitar for the enthusiast who knows what they're looking for: historical specifications, excellent finish, and a tone that has defined generations.
